The Aître Saint Maclou was an empty open yard in front of the Church Saint Maclou until the great plague epidemic in the middle of 14th Century, which converted the yard into a crematory. The four galleries were subsequently created and were used as a storage area for bones and skulls of the dead. After the prohibition of burials in the city center, the Aître Saint Maclou was converted into a school and now houses Regional School of Fine Arts and Heritage Service. However, the carvings on the pillars and columns of the structure give strong reminiscence of its history.
