This city for many years was the industrial capital of the region. In 1820, it was decided that the city was to be the center of the cloth-making industry. For around a century the city was very vibrant and active, but with the decline of the cloth making industry after World War I, the city itself also went into decline. After World War II, the city lost most of its importance, but at the turn of the 21st Century it is again becoming an important complex. It again has been nominated to be the center of the Lodzkie Voivodeship, and the influx of institutions of higher learning in the years after World War II has helped to bring new people to the city. Lodz is the third-largest city in Poland in terms of population.
