This church is one of the most characteristic Hallekerkes of the North. Its construction, in the flamboyant style of Walloon Flanders, lasted for over five centuries. In 1875, the architect Canissié restored the church, extending the naves and building the façade and its bell tower with an open work design. The church is adorned with paintings that came from the religious communities dispersed at the time of the revolution. Particularly impressive are works by Van Oost (of the Flemish school of art) and Rossignol (French school). There is a God of Piety that was already venerated in 1663 and a small St Roch in polychrome wood, leaning against a pillar (1668). The overall beauty of the church of St-Maurice lies less in its works of art than in the general harmony of the church - its five naves make up a vast barn where the alignment of the columns creates a very deep space which is pleasurable to experience.
