Le Mans, Le Mans, 72000
The city of Le Mans is located on the River Sarthe and dates back to the Roman era when it was known as Vindinium, the capital of the Aulerci tribe. Today, visitors can observe ruins such as remnants of ancient Roman walls and baths along the river. A visit to the well-preserved old part of the city allows visitors to enjoy the cobbled routes and timbered houses in a quaint setup reminiscent that of the early 19th-century. Le Mans is also a seat of the Roman Catholic diocese and comprises several architectural landmarks as well as tourist destinations such as Cathédrale St-Julien - a cathedral dedicated to the city's first bishop - and a museum called Musée de la Reine Bérengère, which showcases the history of the city. Home to the oldest motorsport events in France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycle race, adrenaline junkies flock to the area during the racing season.
