Palmer

The city of Palmer was named after George Palmer who built a trading post along the Matanuska River where hectic fur trading river activity took place even after Alaska was sold to America by Russia. Predominantly an agrarian society, the Great Depression actually changed the complexion of this city after coal fields were discovered. As of now, Palmer is steeped with natural beauty and glaciers, and is an attractive destination for winter sports enthusiasts. The annual Alaska State Fair is held with great fanfare too.
