Italy
An ancient city, the existence of Ancona can be traced back to around 387 BCE, when Greeks from Syracuse, Italy settled here. The name ‘Ancona’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘elbow’, because of the shape the promontory that protects the city’s natural harbor. After the Greeks, the city saw conquests by several kingdoms, including the Roman Empire, the Goths, the Byzantine Empire, and the French, till finally, it became a part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860 CE. The rich history is evident in the numerous buildings and structures, like the Arch of Trajan, the Cathedral of Ancona, and the Lazaretto by Luigi Vanvitelli.
