Also known as Saint Bartholomew Bridge (Ponte di San Bartolomeo), due to the proximity of the Basilica of St. Bartholomew on the Island (Basilica di San Bartolomeo all’Isola) which has sat on Tiber Island (Isola Tiberina) since 997 CE, Ponte Cestio connects the island with the Lungotevere degli Anguillara. The bridge was constructed in 62 BCE and subsequently restored various times throughout history, until, between 1885 and 1888, it was almost completely demolished. More than a century later, in 1999, Pons Cestius was entirely restored. Its picturesque location, nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Tiber River and the surrounding cityscape, makes it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
