Located in the east of the city, beside the University of Amsterdam's Science Park, Flevopark is a large, sprawling green area with a slightly wilder feel than the more manicured Vondelpark and Oosterpark. Paths wind in and out among thickets of trees that play home to darting, bright green parrots and nesting families of herons. The many private groves in Flevopark make it a good choice for a barbecue on a sunny day, and the waterside is spotted with picnic tables. The adventure-filled playground lends out tools and woods so kids can practice their carpentry skills and build huts.
