The large Dominican church on Spuistraat in Amsterdam's city center is a spiritual home for the city's Dominican Christians. There was a Domincan church in Amsterdam in 1621, but it remained hidden. Construction of the impressive building seen today began in 1882, under the commission of architect Pierre Cuypers. A large tower had initially been planned for the church, but did not make it into the final design. Today, the Dominican Church remains a place of worship that hosts services but also offers nighttime concerts that focus on religious and world music. Concert times vary depending on the show.
