The city of Bridgeport has enjoyed a long and eventful history that began long before the region was colonized. Over time, the city grew to be an important center of trade, with thriving shipbuilding and whaling industries. Today, the city is one of the Connecticut's most populous and is home to a diverse community. Much of the city's historic heritage has been preserved and is a treasure trove for those with an interest in colonial architecture and American history. The historic homes and mansions that line the streets of the Stratfield Historic District, Black Rock Harbor Historic District and the Marina Park Historic District reflect a variety of historic architectural styles. The City also boasts a number of public parks and a vibrant cultural scene with theaters, museums, music festivals, concert series and more to look forward to. Popular tourist attractions and entertainment venues include the Webster Bank Arena, Barnum Museum and Beardsley Zoo.
