Noord Brabantlaan 1A, Eindhoven, 5652 LA
Amid a sea of regularly shaped buildings speckled across the city, the Evoluon structure strikingly stands out as something out of a Sci-Fi movie. Clad in a medley of lights, this erstwhile science museum seems especially otherworldly in the dark of the night,, not unlike a mothership summoning its smaller craft after a mission. Since its construction in 1966 by electric giant Philips, this building has held the city in rapt attention. The brainchild of Dr. Frits Philips, the Evoluon was intended to serve as a gigantic science repository, a place where scientific exhibitions could be held to educate the modern society about advances in the field. While this landmark structure basked in popularity through most of the 1960s and 70s, the adulation waned as newer science museums started cropping up in neighboring cities. While the museum finally shut shop in 1989, the building revamped itself as a conference center, opening again in 1998. While Dr. Philips' pipe dream was never fully realized, the Evoluon continues to fulfill its destiny as a legendary landmark in Eindhoven, holding a range of large-scale concerts, conference events, TED talks, and exhibitions within its saucer-shaped sprawl.
