The city of Oulu continues to thrive around this monumental landmark, which was constructed in 1777 as a tribute to Gustav III, King of Sweden. The church was consequently named after the king's wife Sofia Magdalena. Designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel, the buttery yellow facade of the church was built over the ruined remains of the church's original wooden structure, which was lost to a fiery disaster in 1822. Although the complete restoration came through in 1832, the belfry was added only in the year 1845. Amid the environs of the city center, the Oulu Cathedral stands as a magnificently imposing religious landmark, and the seat of the Diocese of Oulu.
