Situated on the picturesque Yèvre river, Bourges has a long and winding history that can be explored simply by walking around its historic streets. The name Bourges is thought to have come from the word Bituriges, which was the name of the area's original inhabitants. The city featured during some part of the Gallic Wars, while Julius Caesar decimated the city's population in a siege in 52 BCE. The city was then reconstructed in the fashions favored by the Roman Empire. Today, visitors to the area can view Bourges' famous landmarks, including the city's Gothic Cathedral and Jacques Cœur's palace.
