One of the most prominent and biggest castle ruins in the country, the Burg Königstein probably dates back earlier than the 11th Century. Located on the top of a hill, this castle was renovated several times over the years. The castle withstood many wars until the Koalitionskriegs took place in 1796 and the castle was majorly destroyed. The castle was then acquired by the city and was opened to public visitation. Many local events, especially musical concerts and theatrical acts take place at the castle quite often. The Burgfest, Rock auf der Burg, and Theater auf der Burg are held at the castle annually.
