Klosterhof 6, Schöntal, 74214
A Baroque masterpiece, the Schöntal Abbey is a major tourist attraction of Schöntal. A former Cistercian monastery, the abbey is currently used as a conference and training center by the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. The abbey was founded in 1157 by monks of Maulbronn. After increasing financial debts, the abbey was handed over to the Kaisheim Abbey. 1945, the abbey succumbed to severe damage during the German Peasant's War rendering it uninhabitable. Once again, the abbey was besieged by the Thirty Years' War in 1631 and was finally abandoned. In 1683, Abbott Benedikt Knittel revived the abbey and supervised the construction of the church. In 1802, secularization caused the abbey to fall and the complex was then undertaken by the Kingdom of Württemberg.
