The Florida State Capitol is an iconic architectural landmark that is steeped in history. Originally built in 1845, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The classical dome was added in 1902, and the building underwent several other subsequent expansions. The capitol was almost torn down to make room for a new one in the 1970s, but was saved through citizens actions. Today, on display in the capitol are well-preserved photographs, audio clips, recordings and visual exhibits on the same and the building functions as the Florida Historic Capitol Museum.
