Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is the site where James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848, which initiated the famous California Gold Rush in its wake. What was once the site of a legendary event, today largely pays its tributes to James Marshall and the Gold Rush. Spanning the recesses of the historic Coloma town, the park encompasses several acres, and shelters many intriguing sites within its bounds. Perched atop a hill is the glorious monument to James W. Marshall and the historic Sutter's Mill, the very spot where Marshall discovered gold. The park is also home to the Golden Discovery Museum which features exhibits, displays and myriad mementos from the Gold Rush era.
