Flecked by a vivid array of flowers and unique plant species, the Viles Arboretum is bathed in immense color and bloom, making it one of the most pleasant attractions to visit in Augusta. Over 300 different species of shrubs and flowering trees thrive under its wings, and the arboretum therefore possesses one of the most diverse collections of flora in the city. Spread across a vast expanse of 224 acres (90.6 hectares), this premier garden also shelters within its bounds a wealth of flora endemic to Maine, a sub-garden classified as a Tree Farm Demonstration Area. Its other exhibits span a wide range, from impressive American chestnut and vibrant lilac collections, to conifer species from both North America and beyond. Scenic 6-mile (9.65 kilometers) trails meander through the park's leafy sprawl, letting one get back to nature in one of the best ways possible.
