Formerly known as Banna, Birdoswald Roman Fort was once a stronghold that served as a demarcation of the Roman Empire in Britain. One of the best preserved forts along Hadrian's Wall, the fort was built strategically to provide the Romans with eyes over the River Irthing. Currently part of the former Birdoswald farm, the listed English Heritage site offers a glimpse into its history through the ages, with a number of fascinating, excavated artifacts exhibited here.
