Quaint, beautiful and historic, the coastal town of Harwich has much to offer its visitors. Although it is unclear exactly when Harwich came to be, its history can be traced back to at least the 12th Century. The town is endowed with a rich maritime heritage, and was once rigorously fortified as its fortuitous location also made it a target for enemy attacks. Characterized by medieval and Victorian buildings, a lovely sandy beach and a rich history, Harwich has come to be a popular tourist destination. Attractions deserving of special note include the church of St. Nicholas, the Harwich High Lighthouse, and the Guildhall. The town has now come to be contiguous with Dovercourt which is a worthy tourist destination on its own.
