Dartmoor National Park's largest town, Ashburton remained a major hub for tin business during the middle ages. Till the 1950s, Ashburton largely remained a forsaken town but the beauty and the tranquility of the scenic Dart Valley started attracting residents and tourists who desired to escape the fast-paced urban life. Today, Ashburton is a popular center for tourism, with canoeing, fishing, pony trekking and walking bringing several travelers to this quaint town. Ashburton is also home to several specialist shops, galleries, antique shops and historic inns and pubs. Several unusual ceremonies take place in this town, including the bread weighing and ale tasting ceremonies.
