TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
An ancient town, Xanten was first inhabited by isolated communities sometime around 2000 BCE. Xanten's reconstruction as well as the rebuilding of the town's cathedral is primarily credited to Walter Bader, a noted monument conservationist, and archaeologist. Today, this historic town is famous for its Archaeological Park. This is one of the biggest archaeological museum villages in the world. The medieval city center of this town is quite picturesque, including several museums and the Xanten Cathedral. A large artificial lake is popular for watersports. Xanten also hosts several prominent events like the annual Xantener Montmartre, which attracts artists from different parts of the world to exhibit their newest works.
