Fashioned from pink and white marble, Fontana Maggiore forms the core of Perugia's Piazza IV Novembre. Midway between the San Lorenzo cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori, the fountain is an awe-inspiring vision that dates back to the Medieval era. Sculpted by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, and designed by Fra Bevignate, this polygonal fountain depicts biblical scenes, zodiac signs, historical excerpts, and other symbolic figures in bas-relief. Completed in 1278, in celebration of the newly established free Commune of Perugia, the fountain has been untouched by the passage of time and is a picturesque remnant of the years gone by.
