TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
It is said that in 1655, a mulatto painted an image of Christ crucified on the wall of some slaves' quarters, which later resisted strong earthquakes. The image came to be worshipped, with the viceroy himself among its devotees. The Lord of Miracles, as he is still known today, came to be the patron saint of Lima and a small church was built in his honor. Every October, a replica of this image is carried through the streets of Lima, followed by thousands of people in an impressive and passionate procession.
