The small resort town of Portstewart is found in the Londonderry County of Northern Ireland. The harbour town, established by John Cromie in 1792 as a fishing village, runs along the Atlantic coastline and has a number of magnificent coastal paths that lead to the sandy beach of Portstewart Strand. Tourists have arrived in the town since Victorian times and it continues to attract surfers and other holidaymakers. Apart from visitors, the town is alive with the large student population who study at the nearby Coleraine campus of the University of Ulster. the 2001 Census put the population of the town at 7,803 people. The town has produced important personalities like songwriter Jimmy Kennedy, singer Briana Corrigan, comedian Jimeoin, among others.
