Established in 19 CE, the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls was developed for circus games and shows as part of the Sanctuary of the Three Gauls in Lyon. The foundation of this roman amphitheater was celebrated by 60 Gallic tribes who met to consolidate their support of Imperial Rome and Augustus. It was here that Sainte-Blandine died in 177 CE, remembered as one of Gaul's first Christian martyrs. Funded by a royal Gallic family, the edifice is an oval central arena with cross walls and area for seating. It underwent several restorations and expansions plans during its lifespan and is now declared as a major historical monument of France. The heritage site is closed to visitors, who must admire the ruins from outside its ancient walls.
