Established in the 1794, Maksimir Park predates any known public garden in Southeast Europe. Originally existing as forest lands, the park was conceived by Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac and still preserves its nearly century-old oak forests. The impeccably landscaped park spans 316 hectares (780 acres), with beautiful lakes and meadows, and houses a stunning selection of flora and fauna. The park is prominently home to nearly a 100 bird species and also has an on-site zoo, a fun draw for families. Prominent other sights at the park include Bishop Haulik’s New Villa and the Echo Pavilion.
