Grottaferrata is a small hilly town located on the lower reaches of the volcanic Alban Hills. The town grew around a monastery called the Basilian Monastery of Santa Maria which was established in this town in 1004 which is now a Italo-Greek Catholic church. The abbey church which was designed by the famous architect, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger is an impressive Renaissance structure with beautiful mosaics, arches, frescoes and more. The pleasant Mediterranean climate and surrounding hills make for this town to be a nice place to visit.
