Located quite close to the Bosnia-Croatian border, Velika Kladuša is city rich with history, culture and architecture. It is considered to be the modern center of the region with hospitals, government organizations and stores found here. Believed to have founded around the 13th Century, it boasts of many castles and mosques featuring Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. It later came under the rule of Socialist Yugoslavia and was known as one of the wealthiest cities in the region after prospering from trade with a giant food producing company. It is also quite a treat for nature enthusiasts as it is surrounded by dense forests, rivers and beautiful landscapes.
