Set against a backdrop of towering mountains, the turquoise and sapphire blue waters of Lake Garda form Italy's largest freshwater lake. The lake lies in northeast Italy, about half-way between Verona and Brescia, hemmed by the lofty castles, glistening domes and red roofs of several cities and small towns. A number of popular attractions lie along the shores of Lake Garda, the most notable of which is perhaps the Scaliger Castle in the city of Sirmione. Lake Garda is also a popular choice for watersports like kiteboarding, windsurfing and sailing, while its sprawling, mountainous surrounds are ideal for hiking. Several trails riddle the foothills just off the shores of Lake Garda.
