Embedded deep into the Alaskan Kenai Peninsula, this ethereal 6 mile-long (9.6 kilometers) glacial realm sits near the southeastern ridges of the icy Portage Lake. Considered only to be a myth, the glacier was officially discovered by Thomas Corwin Mendenhall in the year 1898 when he embarked on an expedition on behalf of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey for which he was the superintendent at the time. The ice formation is the centerpiece of the acclaimed Chugach National Forest and houses the famed Begich/Boggs Visitor Center, that treats its guests to some unforgettable scenic views of the surrounding ice-clad landscape.
