Built on a cliff overhanging Lough Swilly, Fort Dunree has spectacular panoramic views in all directions, from Inch Island across to Portsalon Strand (where another fort stands). Built in the 18th Century by the British as protection against invasion from the French, it was only handed over to Ireland by the Royal Navy as late as 1938. The fort has now been turned into a military museum, with one of the best audio/visual displays of its kind in Ireland. It contains large coastal-protection weapons in their original sites. Its visitor advantages include a coffee shop, scenic routes and a fine beach for walks.
