The Verona Carnival began all the way back in 1530. It belongs to an ancient tradition and revolves around the Bacanal del Gnoco. Gnocchi is a typical local dish, made from potato and flour, formed into a variety of shapes, quickly boiled, and then served with a variety of sauces. The Papà del Gnocco, a local fictional character portrayed by a masked actor, distributes the delicacy around carnival time, and especially on "Gnocchi Friday" (the last Friday before Lent, Good Friday), when this quirky Veronese celebration takes place.
