The camel races were once a fictitious event created by a Virginia City newspaper editor to fill up space in the news-starved periodical. In 1960, Hollywood director John Houston decided to make the races a reality, importing the obnoxious beasts from the San Francisco Zoo. Since that time, the camel races have been an annual September event. It has added ostrich and buffalo races, but the contrary camels remain the stars. The whole town gets into the action with parades, food and other festivities at the Camel Arena.
