The Cape Town, South Africa-based hip hop trio Die Antwoord became somewhat of an overnight phenomenon in 2009--grabbing attention for its mesh of English and Afrikaans raps, as well as its Zef (a South African slang term for trashy, modern style) dance beats. The trio, consisting of Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek create slightly over-the-top electropop-meets-rap material, full of pop culture samplings and references. Often deemed offensive, the band plays up the art-punk aspect of its music, and this controversy has only added to the band's mystique and success.
