Originally conceived in 1983 by physics professor Kevin Stigwoodt, The Spazmatics was born when Stigwood lost a bet and had to perform "She Blinded Me With Science" at halftime of his school's state championship basketball game. He enlisted the help of electronics teacher Sydney Balderman, his brother Curtis Stigwood and a TA named Rusty A. Woosmeir. The group stunned the student body with its spot on production, musicianship and choreography, earning a standing ovation. The makeshift band was approached by producers from Perfect World Entertainment to create a proper production that would go on to become a nation-wide celebration of the best and worst of 1980's music and fashion. Now pegged as The Ultimate New Wave 1980s Show, versions of The Spazmatics have popped up all across the US in major cities including Chicago, Houston and Austin, TX while the original Los Angeles-based group continues to perform weekly gigs at Zanzibar in Santa Monica while also rotating around to various clubs around the area.
