San Francisco in the 60s was a magical place. It was a breeding ground for people who were tired of the nuclear family normalcy of the 50s and who wanted to explore the far reaches of human experimentation and cultural possibilities. Peace and love flourished during this time and so did psychedelic music. People thought that this movement was going to evolve and grow into a widespread national movement and several bands like Big Brother & the Holding Company helped define this social development. The Holding Company was formed in 1965 and even boasted the vehement blues vocalist Janis Joplin for a period of time. The group has experienced its ups and downs - breaking up in 72 and reforming in 87 - but the band's current incarnation is a powerful touring outfit and an opportunity to see the Holding Company perform in the flesh is a chance not to be missed.
