Gotye is the project of the Australia-based independent artist Walter De Backer. After spending the first leg of his career playing in various rock band in Melbourne, he embarked on a solo endeavor in the early 2000s to explore experimental and electronic music. De Backer adopted the moniker Gotye and began creating collage-style cut and paste songs built upon old vinyl records, tape samples and live instrumentation. Gotye began employing orchestral elements and features of 1980s pop into his indie rock style, resulting in the experimental sound that would go on to make him famous. After releasing the 2011 single "Somebody That I used to Know," Gotye became a world-renowned name as the track became a mainstay on several international radio stations and stimulated serious buzz for his subsequent album, Making Mirrors.
