Thomas Truax is a singer/songwriter and creator of experimental musical instruments. He made a name for himself in New York during the 1990s, when he helped pioneer the antifolk movement. In a move to distinguish himself from the countless bands and songwriters in NYC, he went on invent his own instruments, starting with the Cadillac Beatspinner Wheeland the Hornicator. Utilizing his primitive instruments a looper pedal, he stood apart as a solo act and captured the attention of the international experimental music audience with records like his 2002 debut, Full Moon Over Wowtown. Paired with a more traditional singer/songwriter format than his antifolk beginings, his instruments, from the Mary Poppina, a metal tube attached to a helicopter spinner, and the Backbeater, a colleciton of rotating spokes that Truax wears on his back, put in a crossover sweet spot where he has the attention of the avant-garde performance art community, indie pop audiences and everything in between.
