Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band from South Yorkshire, England that was formed in 1917. The group's long history traces back to coal mines in Central England. After spending all day working in the mines, musically inclined individuals would get together and hold jam sessions and occasionally perform concerts for local townsfolk. All throughout the 1940s, the group appeared regularly on UK national radio at least once a month, and in 1972, the ensemble won the British Open Contest under the direction of Elgar Howarth.
