One of Mozart's early operatic masterpieces, Idomeneo is performed in Italian and begins with Prince Paris running off with Helen, Menelaus' wife, which triggers the Trojan war. Ilia, daughter of the tragically defeated Trojan king Priam, falls in love with Idamante, son of Idomeneo, king of Crete. Elettra, daughter of Agamemnon, who had previously defeated Troy, is jealous of Ilia. Meanwhile, Idomeneo is thought to be lost at sea, but is actually saved from the rough waters by Neptune.
