Formed in 2000, Shaka Ponk is an electronic rock band from Paris that uses elements of various genres including punk, world music and electronic dance music. Guitarist CC and creative leader Frah, a former web designer, founded the band with the idea of combining standard rock and roll with VJ-ing, mixing sounds and images. They eventually came up with a concept that revolved around an animated monkey they named Goz, which led Shaka Ponk to create an online presence of motion graphic videos via its online channel, Monkey TV. The band released its album Bad Porn Movie Trax, in 2010, only a year after playing its debut show, complete with Goz-inspired videos, in New York City. In 2011, Shaka Ponk added female singer Samaha Sam, and the funk elements in the band's music came to the forefront of its sound.
