Comets on Fire was an underground psychedelic noise rock project based out of the small coastal town of Santa Cruz, California. The band's members seemed to laugh in the face of those who wanted to pin them under the umbrella of one specific genre, preferring instead to brashly throw together a spattering of influences that date back to at least the 1970s. A debut record was released in 2001 on Jello Biafra's label Alternative Tentacles, and captured the sound of a band enamored with Motorhead, noisy punk rock and the raucous garage blues of groups such as The Stooges and MC5. By the time it'd signed to Sub Pop in 2004, Comets on Fire was beginning to stretch its legs a bit, focusing on material that worked in heavy doses of neo-psychedelia. The band disbanded in 2008.
