Kirsty MacColl (1959-2000) was a new wave singer/songwriter from Croydon, England who is perhaps best known for her collaborations with such renowned alternative artists and bands as Tracey Ullman, The Smiths and her producer husband, Steve Lilywhite. MacColl experienced much success early on in her career during the 1980s, releasing several singles that would perform very well on British music charts. However, because of legal problems with her recording contract, she was unable to record solo work in the late 1980s, and instead focused her talents on collaborating with other artists on their work--often to great success for both her and the artist. Although her life was tragically cut short by a boating accident in 2000, Kirsty MacColl is still widely considered to be one of the biggest influences on the British new wave scene.
