Angels of America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes (also known simply as Angels in America) is a play in two parts by American playwright Tony Kushner and has since been adapted as a television miniseries on HBO and an opera by Péter Eötvös. The play takes inspiration from actual events in contemporary American history and weaves these tales into a story that both entertains and educates its audience on the issues that affect homosexual Americans. Having received numerous awards since its premier in San Francisco in 1991, including two Tony Awards for "Best Play" and a Pulitzer Prize, Angels in America stands as one of the greatest plays to explore gay themes in contemporary American drama.
