16th century British composer John Dowland wrote songs for lute and the voice, a popular lutenist and singer in his own day. He is revered for his melancholy songs, most notably "Come, Heavy Sleep," "Flow My Tears," and "I Saw My Lady Weepe." Many of his songs have been revived and used as inspiration for subsequent composers and much of his instrumental work was revived in the 20th century by classical guitarists.
