One of the best-known bands of the mid-70s, Mott the Hoople has been known by multiple names over the years. It started performing in the UK under the names of Silence, and Shakedown Sound. The new name - Mott the Hoople - was adopted, albeit reluctantly, when Ian Hunter came on board as the lead singer of the group. With a new name and member, the band went on to record its debut album after a few weeks of rehearsing. The eponymous album, with numbers like "Rock 'n' Roll Queen," "Half Moon Bay" and "Wrath and Wroll" achieved cult status. Despite having a decent fan-following, the band's subsequent albums - Mad Shadows, Wildlife and Brain Capers - failed to make a mark, almost causing the band to break-up. Its saving grace came in the form of its biggest hit to date, "All the Young Dudes," written for the group by its longtime fan David Bowie in an attempt to get the members to stay together. Its name was shortened to just Mott when Ian Hunter quit the group. It has since then disbanded and reunited multiple times, going on reunion tours every now and then.
