The Daughter of the Regiment, also known as La fille du régiment, is an an opéra-comique by French composer Gaetano Donizetti with a libretto by Jules-Henry Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-Francois Bayard. Set in the Swiss Tyrol, the production follows the story Marie, who was found on a battlefield as a baby and adopted by soldiers of the twenty-first regiment. While Tonio, the man she loves, enlists to be a member of the regiment so they can be together, Marie finds out she is part of the royal family and follows them away from her long-time brothers. Separated from her lover and due to be married to the son of the duchess, she loses all hope until she hears familiar martial music approach the walls of the castle.
