Through its history, Fortuna Sittard has enjoyed a mixed run of form in the Dutch football league. The team was founded in 1968 and was quick to rise to the level of some of the country's best teams. Its best run came in the 1990s when it played in the Eredivisie for seven consecutive seasons. Fortuna Sittard time in the top flight was ended in 2002 when it relegated to the Eerste Divisie. However a second-placed finish in 2018 sealed its return to top flight football.
