The New England Patriots were an original member of the American Football League and joined the National Football League in 1970. They compete in the AFC East Division. The Pats lost their first two trips to the Super Bowl in 1985 and 1996 but went on to win three Super Bowls in four years in the early 2000s. In 2007, the Patriots won all 16 regular season games and advanced to Super Bowl XLII, only to fall short to the New York Giants. It was only the second time in league history a team made it through the regular season without losing a game.
